2008 CBMC Salt & Light Award Recipient
Max Barnett

Max Barnett is a common man who has had an uncommon impact on his generation.  Born four days after Christmas 1936 in Lamb County, Texas, with only 20,000 in the entire county, his family home was in the small community of Fieldton.  He made his personal commitment to Christ at around 7 years old.

He enrolled at Texas A&M in 1955, and was one of only 64 admitted to the veterinarian school.  After the first couple of years preparing for veterinary medicine, he began to have serious doubts about a future career as a veterinarian.  Meanwhile, God was using a little band of BSU students as witnesses to bring an average of two students a week to faith in Christ.  Word spread.  Max and a friend were approached about dropping out of school to do witness training on other campuses across the nation.  After promising his parents that he would return and finish school, they agreed with Max’s decision to accept the call.  After graduating from A&M in animal husbandry in August 1960, rather than pursing his earlier career plans, he moved to Ft. Worth and entered Southwestern Theological Seminary.  He knew he had a lot more to learn and that seminary offered that chance.

Max was offered an opportunity in Dallas doing BSU work at the med school.  Student work was a perfect fit to make disciples for Christ and teach them to reproduce the process.  Just as Max accepted his new position in Dallas and while attending the orientation for new directors, he met future wife Sandra Tilley who was a secretary for Dr. Howard, Max’s new boss!  In his relationship with Sandra, Max proceeded in his customary manner—pray, seek counsel, and wait on the Lord.

Another major change occurred when Max was offered the position of BSU Director in Norman; they moved to their new home in January 1967 with sons Brent’s birth following in July.  He remained BSU’s spiritual leader until his retirement in 2004 after 37 years.
